But try to "search" for a plugin... try a multi word search. No plugins found, no plugins found, ..... still a mess there yeah.. of course they did.

It would seem so. You can now filter plugins by most recent or most popular. They have also added a search field for plugins, a description of the plugin, download stats and plugin ratings. They essentially went down my list and added everything except versioning. If they intend to do this, my suggestion would be to look at how WordPress does it on their site.
